Born + raised in Pittsburgh, PA, John Malecki is a yinzer at heart. After a college football career at Pitt and an NFL career culminating with a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers, John Malecki acquired some tools and took up woodworking as a hobby, building projects for himself, loved ones, and local commissions. Over time, he grew to love + develop his craft and started documenting his builds with step-by-step video tutorials on YouTube. As it turns out, the internet couldn’t get enough of this jolly guy. Flash forward a few years, and John Malecki has more than half a million YouTube subscribers (and growing), dozens of corporate sponsors, a full “squirrelly squad'', merchandise, and bigger, crazier projects than ever before.
John Malecki built a website on WordPress designed to share + disperse information about his projects to his most loyal followers. While his site worked great at first, he struggled to maintain a blog, multiple broken WordPress plugins, and the glitchy WooCommerce backend as his brand grew.
John Malecki was in need of a website that could support his growing digital presence. Not only was he looking to effectively highlight his video content to expand his reach and add value for his corporate sponsors, but he also needed to enhance his site’s eCommerce capabilities without being bogged down by a clunky CMS.
We began our relationship with John by rewriting all the blogs on his site, transforming them into step-by-step how-to’s. Since these rewrites required a high degree of technical knowledge, they were the perfect way for us to get to know John and what he was all about.
After that, we moved on to his website redesign. While John’s old WordPress site was slow, contained dozens of broken elements, and wasn’t ranking on search engines, his new Webflow site with an embedded Shopify store was fully shoppable for plans and merchandise, and better organized his tool reviews, projects, and affiliate sponsor links. After John saw all the opportunities that came with embedding a Shopify store onto his site, we built him an entire online store on Shopify.
Eventually, John Malecki was able to bring on his own staff to help with his digital presence, content, and brand. But when their needs + responsibilities continued to grow as a team, John was ready to outsource his blogging again. We were happy to help, providing edits + blog creation for all the new content on his site. The blogs also served as a new way to refer people to his YouTube channel, grow his email list, and disperse information about his builds and affiliates. We also began email marketing campaigns through Mailchimp to share his work with his most excited and engaged subscribers.
